Benzoyl Peroxide Review

Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment is one if not the most used medications world wide . Benzoyl peroxide is a very strong ingredient and a lot of products have it in them just because is it so powerful and effective . It comes in many forms such as washing lotions , creams , gels or soap bars and you can have it with or without prescription, depending on the concentration the product that you want has .

How it worksBenzoyl Peroxide : How does it work ?

It forces oxygen into the skin’s pores. Why ? because the bacteria that causes acne is not able to live in an environment that has a lot of oxygen in it so by forcing oxygen into the skin’s pores the bacteria dies. After this, the acne breakouts will be fewer as time goes by .

Another thing that Benzoyl Peroxide does is that it removes the dead skin cells that are in the area of the acne , which might be a cause of the acne breakouts.

As I mentioned , dead skin cells block the pores which leads to breakouts so by removing the dead skin cells, the breakouts disappear before they even have a chance to begin! It is very important that even after you see improvements you need to continue the treatment , otherwise bacteria can come back and the whole effort is lost .

Time Needed

Benzoyl Peroxide: For how long ?

The time needed for a complete treatment should be advised by your own dermatologist, after a close look at your skin tendencies . However the general advice is not to use it for a long period of time as it is after all an antibiotic and eventually the skin will begin to tolerate it .

ConcentrationBenzoyl Peroxide: Concentration

As I said , Benzoyls Peroxide comes in different forms but most of them have the concentration of Benzoyls Peroxide of 2,5% . Make sure you check on the box before you purchase any treatment that the concentration is not below that threshold If you use a cream or gel you should apply it twice a day in a thin layer . The soap should be used whenever as possible but not more than 5-6 times a day .

Side EffectsBenzoyl Peroxide : Side Effects

The safety of Benzoyl Peroxide is relative . In comparison to stronger formulas like isotretinoin it is harmless but the reality is that Benzoyl Peroxide is a strong medication and should be taken only after you are sure that you can handle the side effects such as:

  • excessive or irregular skin dryness – this is the major side effect and it is recommended to use a skin moisturizer .
  • severe inflamation and irritation of the mucosa in case comes in touch with it . If it enters your mouth or eyes , rinse with a lots of water!
  • skin whitening and hair decoloration(if it comes in contact with it)

All in all it is a good remedy but be wise before you start a treatment with Benzoyl Peroxide , consult your doctor and stick with it even after you see a better skin !
